The second round took place on July 5th, with Mike Dyer again supplying the transport.
Plenty of varieties of fish, including the first ever Goldsinny Wrasse recorded in the
Poor Cod, Pollack, Mackerel, Tope, Gobies, Ballan and Cuckoo Wrasse to go with the Goldsinny, Pouting, Black Bream, Grey Gurnards, Common Hounds, and Thornbacks made up the days catch.
Hard work on the day, but hopefully enjoyable to all on board.
Mike Patten in his first match this year came out top on the day followed by team mate Ian McLean, giving 3Bs a substantial lead going into the final round.

Very poor response this year with only one boat running. My thanks to Brunel, Mendip, 3Bs and Clevedon Pier for their support.
I have offered to run the comp next year unless anyone wishes to take it on. Competition secretaries are up for election in July.
Round one was fished on a beautiful day, but apart from 101 doggies, shared between all on board, most species were shy. 11 Poor Cod, 11 Pollock, 7 Ballans, I Bull Huss, 3 Tope, 1 Blonde, 2 Grey Gurnard (can’t remember any being recorded in this comp in the years I have been involved) 1 Red, 1 Tub and a Blenny. Ian McLean was top man on the day, and shared the “Most species” pool with club mate Dave Rigby As you can see, not an easy day out, but according to Angie – Good weather and good company.
My thanks to Robin for running the match in my absence.

Final round of Charterboat competition 2008
“Atlantic Blue” and “Osprey” left Minehead on time for the final round of this years competition with full crews in reasonable conditions, pretty flat, but overcast with showers.
Mike Patten and Ian McLean fishing for 3Bs went into the day with a healthy lead from the previous round, and went on to consolidate their lead, and therefore land the championship for the year. Mike, fishing with Mike Dyer on “Atlantic Blue” came out tops on his boat, while Ian fishing on “Osprey” with Steve Webber came overall top man on the day.
Most Anglers found plenty of species, Poor Cod seem to abound with 94 being registered on the day, not exciting but they did keep the scoreboard ticking over. Quite a few Dogs, Pout and Whiting were also showing with lesser numbers of Tope (12). Black Bream (9), Starry Hounds (9), Pollack (18), Conger (14), Thornback (1), Scad (1), Mackerel (4), Common Hounds (3), Ballans (5), and Tub Gurnard (4)….a total of 15 species.
Total number of fish landed on both boats was 329…Mike found 168, while Steve weighed in with 161
Top Specie hunters on the day were Ian McLean with ten, Linda Strong of Clevedon Pier “A” with nine. Mike Patten was joined on eight species by Roger Carrow (Pier E), Andy Yabley, (Pier E), and Pete Lloyd (Pier A)
Top boat on the day was “Osprey” with 2612 pts, while “Atlantic Blue” scored 2588pts.
Overall scores over the series for the boats were
“Osprey”….4618
“Atlantic Blue”….4290
I don’t think that too many would disagree that it was a fun contest, that’s the way I intend it to be, with the less experienced hopefully learning from the more capable anglers.
This year was very much an effort to get the contest up and running after a lull of two years, and I feel it was a success. Both boats filled on both occasions, and both Mike and Steve doing their bit to keep the punters happy.
I was disappointed with the number of clubs competing, four clubs from the twenty three in the Federation. Of course I realise that all clubs are not boat orientated, but there did appear to be anglers from other clubs who didn’t even know there was a competition being run, so hopefully when we are running next year, same format as before, I will be meeting up with a few more of you. As I said, it’s intended as a fun thing…can’t see anything wrong in that, can you?
Again, my thanks to all involved
Ken

CHARTERBOAT COMPETITION
After the disappointment of the first round being blown off, the competition finally got underway.
Fishing out of Minehead, with Mike Dyer and Steve Webber on “Atlantic Blue” and “Osprey”, I think most were surprised with the conditions when they arrived, as the previous day had been a bit windy to say the least. The conditions as the boats left harbour had flattened out, but unfortunately, the rain and wind set in later in the day, giving at times unpleasant conditions, and a few upset tums.
This is primarily a specie hunt; conservation orientated, with no fish needing to be weighed, or at times with the larger fish, no need to be lifted onto the boats, “Touch trace” rules apply. Results are measured in points, not weight.
Top boat on the day was “Osprey” with Steve finding 83 Dogs, 28 Poor Cod, 9Pouts, 8 Ballans, 6 Pollack, 2 Bass, 2 Mackerel, 6 Black Bream, 5 Starries, 1 Common, 2 Tope and 1 Conger.
Mike replied with 51 Dogs, 21 Poor Cod, 6 Conger, 2 Pollack, 25 Pout, 7 Starries and 3 Bull Huss.
Points wise, “Osprey” scored 2006pts to “
Top man on the day was Mike Patten of 3Bs with 449pts and 8 species fishing on “Osprey”. Mike picked up the most specie pool, and top points scorer on his boat
Tops on “Atlantic Blue” was Ian Mclean, again of 3Bs with 384 pts, giving the club a healthy lead going into the final round.
Quite a few anglers picked up good points and a decent few species.
Top men for the other clubs were Pete Lloyd for Clevedon Pier with 298 pts, Mike Jeffries for Brunel with 275pts, and Angie Cox for Mendip with 247, fishing in, I believe her first boat competition.
Many thanks to all of you who supported this comp. I know that conditions weren’t perfect, not a lot I can do about that, but I hope that doesn’t put you of fishing the next round on August 31st.
Part of my thinking behind this competition is that the lesser skilled anglers look and learn from the more adept among us. With that in mind, when I planned the boat placings, I set the first and last round manning as a complete reverse. i.e. if you were on Osprey on the first round, you would be on Atlantic Blue on the final round, or vice-versa, while on the second round, I would mix you up to give you a chance of fishing with different anglers. Unfortunately with the first round cancelled this cant happen, so for the final round, I suggest that we just swap boats with the crews that went out on Sunday. Hope you understand this, if not give me a call.
Again, thanks for your support, see you on August 31st at 0830 for 0930
Regards
Ken
